About Newburyport
Newburyport was settled in 1635 as part of Newberry Plantation, now known as the town of Newbury. In 1764, Newburyport was so densely populated that it became its own town, and in 1851 incorporated into a city. Newburyport is well known for its maritime history of fishing, shipbuilding and manufacturing.
Even though the great fire of 1811 (which leveled the majority of the downtown) and the economic struggle through the 1950’s were hard times for Newburyport – the town persevered in the 1970’s with its urban renewal project. The picturesque mill buildings were restored, the water front park and boardwalk were created and Newburyport has been thriving ever since.
No coastal community would be complete without a beaching destination, and Newburyport has that with Plum Island. Plum Island has beautiful sandy beaches and abundant marshland – great for enjoying a relaxing day or bird watching activities.
Today the city of Newburyport hosts numerous year round festivals, it’s biggest being the week-long event of Yankee Homecoming. Waterfront concerts, abundant activities such as whale watches, historical museums, hiking and biking, boating, dining and retail shopping will keep you thoroughly entertained!
